UVA Lab School Innovation Hub Lab Manager

The School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia seeks a Lab School Innovation Hub Lab Manager. The UVA Innovation Hub at Charlottesville Middle School is a new college partnership laboratory school between the School of Education and Human Development, the Equity Center and Charlottesville City Schools. The mission of the UVA Innovation Hub is to engage all students in personally meaningful, computationally rich and interdisciplinary learning experiences. The vision of the UVA Innovation Hub at Charlottesville Middle School is to provide educational opportunities that inspire curiosity, fuel innovation, and empower all students to solve problems and pursue lifelong learning. The Lab Manager plays a crucial role in facilitating project-based, student-driven learning experiences in collaboration with UVA EHD Curriculum & Instruction faculty, the Science Learning Facilitator, and teachers at Charlottesville Middle School. This position involves collecting student feedback, coordinating schedules, collaborating with school administrators, and ensuring alignment with curriculum standards. Additionally, the Lab Manager will provide evaluation and feedback to students, oversee project-based assessments, and support teachers in integrating computer science into K-8 education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with CMS teachers and administrators to develop a curriculum that aligns with grade-level standards and encompasses innovative, student-driven, computationally rich projects. Regularly update the curriculum to incorporate new technologies, methodologies, and stakeholder feedback.
  • Work with the CCS Science and Innovation Coordinator and CMS administrators to ensure all students have scheduled time in the UVA Innovation Hub.
  • Ensure the UVA Innovation Hub space is a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment. Collaborate with CMS teachers and administrators on identifying and enforcing safety protocols for all equipment and activities in the UVA Innovation Hub. Maintain an inventory of all lab equipment, software, and supplies. Ensure all UVA Innovation Hub technology and materials are up-to-date, functional, and safe for student use. Stay updated on district, state, and federal regulations relevant to technology education and ensure the lab's adherence.
  • Direct hands-on, project-based learning (PBL) experiences that leverage community-based resources in collaboration with CMS teachers. Support and facilitate students' work, encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and computational skills. Foster community engagement and real-world problem solving.
  • Oversee project-based assessments and provide feedback to students and teachers. Solicit feedback from students, teachers, and other stakeholders to identify areas for improvement.
  • Develop and deliver regular professional development sessions, introducing new tools, methodologies, or teaching strategies. Mentor and guide teachers in developing project-based, computationally rich experiences in their classrooms.
  • Organize and host events, showcases, or competitions to highlight student work and promote the lab's initiatives to the wider community.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: Four years of increasingly responsible management and administrative responsibility is required. Two years of supervisory experience is required. Relevant exempt level experience may substitute for a degree.

Preferred Requirements

  • At least five years of experience as a teacher leader.
  • Hold a Virginia teaching license and endorsement in middle school science issued by the Board of Education or be eligible to hold and be working toward a license.
  • A computer science background at the undergraduate and/or graduate level and/or experience integrating computer science in K-8 school settings.
  • Middle school, middle school science or middle school CTE endorsement or an advanced degree in CS/STEM education or a related field.
  • Experience with designing and implementing project-based learning in middle school settings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience providing professional learning experiences around computer science integration with K-8 teachers.
  • Willingness and eagerness to learn and grow individually and as part of the lab school team.
  • Demonstrated maturity, wise decision-making, and professionalism.

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This position is a restricted position, and is dependent upon project needs, availability of funding and performance. The anticipated length of employment based on current funding is 4 years.
