SPLISH SPLASH, WE'RE LEARNING SOME MATH: Since many of you are officially entering your last week of the school year, here’s a start of our emerging “Summer Brain Gain” edition of S’Cool Tools. Got some enlighting suggestions? Let us know!
Free! Without the restrictions of tests and standards, summer is the perfect time for students to catch up on concepts they missed—or get ahead on what they’ll learn next year. Using CK-12 BrainFlex, students can complete exercises on math and science skills, from probability to earth science, and parents can track their progress. Not intended for kids under 13.
Free! What if your students came back to school in September with more math comprehension, rather than less? TenMarks Summer Math runs students through a diagnostic test then tees up a personalized curriculum of videos, word problems, games and more. TenMarks should be used with parental consent.
Free! How many minutes have you read today? The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge nudges kids to log their reading minutes all summer. Kids can compete for total minutes read against their classmates, work together to beat last year’s record (304,749,681 total minutes read!) and earn rewards for their school, including visits from authors like Michael Northrop and Varian Johnson.
Fee: The chase begins June 22! In its second year, Brain Chase is a five-week treasure hunt game powered by reading, writing, math and languages. Students will read online, earn energy points on Khan Academy and so on--all on the path of serious treasure: $10K for a college scholarship fund. Kind of a steal at $200, when you do the math. Here’s what the NYTimes says.
