BRIGHTBYTES: $33 million to San Francisco, CA-based BrightBytes in a Series C round led by Insight Venture Partners, with Bessemer Venture Partners, Learn Capital and Rethink Education also participating. Founded in 2012, BrightBytes offers a platform, Clarity, that helps K-12 administrators and school leaders align school spending with learning outcomes and allocate money more effectively. The tool is based on a framework that examines how technology spending in four areas—classroom, access, skills, environment—impact student learning. More details in the release.
Nick Sinai, Venture Partner at Insight Venture Partners, will join the company’s board of directors. The venture and private equity firm is becoming a familiar name in mid-to-late-stage deals for education companies, having led Pluralsight’s massive $135 million Series B round in 2014 and Instructure’s $40 million Series D round this year. It also participated in Udemy’s $65 million Series D round. Insight Venture Partners, along with Singaporean sovereign wealth fund GIC, also acquired iParadigms, the creator of Turnitin, for $752 million in June 2014.
