MacArthur Foundation Awards $500K for Connected Learning Network in Pittsburgh

Feb 11, 2013

BZZZZ: That buzzing sound comes courtesy of the MacArthur Foundation, which awarded a $500K grant last week to create a Hive Learning Network in Pittsburgh. The Hive isn't a specific physical location (and doesn't house a Queen Bee for that matter, although the fund will be administered by The Sprout Fund). Rather, it's a network of local organizations that include "schools, museums, libraries, after-school programs, community centers" and other places that host projects and learning opportunities involving media and the arts. The core concept for these networks is the "Connected Learning" approach that ties together students' learning experiences in and out of schools and homes. This is the third Hive Learning Network, after similar programs in New York and Chicago
