AN EARNEST CALL TO ACTION: In her recent op-ed on GettingSmart, writer and parent Marie Bjerede implores schools, researchers, content providers, and other third parties to use school data to "make better products for all children." After watching educators beat "the love of math out of [her] precocious, curious math kid" because "they had no diagnostic tools to assess what he really knew and could do beyond grade level," Bjerede recognized how helpful data can be in both tracking student progress and designing better tech tools. Amidst tensions and countless roundtables gathered to discuss privacy and the use and implementation of such data, Bjerede leaves a final call to action to schools and organizations: "Share my kids’ data with third parties."
