EDTECH’S RECORD QUARTER? Educational technology deals appear to be surging—and certainly not declining, as a TechCrunch post in June suggested. The latest analysis by CB Insights found that “Q2’15 set a new high for ed tech financing, with $765M in funding (equal to about 40% of the dollars going to ed tech in all of 2014).” The largest of the 80 deals last quarter was Changingedu, a Chinese online tutoring service that raised a $100 million Series C round in June. Seed and angel deals made up 36% of deals in H1 2015—roughly the same percentage of all deals in 2014.
That CB Insights and TechCrunch arrive at different conclusions about edtech investment trends perhaps suggests different approaches to tracking “education” deals. After all, what counts as “edtech”? How does geography skew the aggregate numbers? And what categories of edtech companies are getting funded? These are a few of the questions we’ll answer in our forthcoming analysis of edtech deals for the first half of 2015. Stay tuned!
