WRITTING WRITING: WriteLab, a browser-based tool that provides feedback on writing, has raised $2 million in a seed funding round led by Reach Capital with participation from Kapor and Learn Capital. According to CEO Matthew Ramirez, the investment will help the company to expand the audience, especially among high school students.
Founded in 2013 by English teachers, the Berkeley-based company has developed a technology that analyzes word choice, emphasis, structure, clarity, coherence, and tone. The algorithm uses statistics to identify students' bad writing habits and provide guidance on how to improve. WriteLab is being used by 12,000 students and throughout 53 writing centers, says Ramirez.
