Microsoft may not top many lists for being the most “innovative” these days. But here’s an exception: Fast Company recorded the tech giant as number one on its 2017 Most Innovative Education Companies list.
However, other legacy businesses were left out as startups filled the majority of the slots. Out of the ten education companies listed only three were not startups—Microsoft, iCivics and Georgia’s Institute of Technology (speaking of blurring the lines between higher education institutions and corporations). According to Fast Company, the list is composed of companies that “tap both heartstrings and purse strings and use commerce to make a difference.” Impact, they claim, is the primary selection criteria.
