ALTSCHOOL ADDITIONS: AltSchool, the experimental “microschool” system based in San Francisco, has hired a slew of executives as it attempts to bring its model to a wider audience. The five new executives, the majority of which have substantial public and charter school experience, are part of an attempt to expand AltSchool Open, a partnership program that allows selected schools to collaborate with AltSchool and pilot its technology platform. While the current partner schools are small and private, AltSchool is now welcoming charter schools to apply for the 2017-2018 school year, and public schools the following year.
Coddy Johnson COO of AltSchool, expects the new hires to foster “deep collaboration and learning” between partner schools and “people who have pushed the boundaries” within charter and public schools. “These partnerships,” Johnson explains, “allow us to make sure we’re getting results and doing no harm. This is the leadership team that’s allowing us to understand what works before scaling up in 2020 and beyond.”
AltSchool’s new leadership hires include:
- Chief Impact Officer (CIO): Superintendent Devin Vodicka, Vista Unified School District
- VP Schools: Pittsburgh Public Schools district leader, Sam Franklin
- VP Growth: Envision Charter Schools’ Ben Kornell
- VP Pedagogy: Colleen Broderick of ReSchool Colorado, EL Education
- VP Ops and Services: AirBnB’s Laura Hughes Modi, former Director of Hospitality
