Amazon Commits $10 Million to Code.org

Oct 12, 2017

COUNTING CODE: Code.org, the nonprofit advocate for bringing computer science to K-12 education, has several new benefactors starting with Amazon, which is donating $10 million to the organization. “Providing opportunities for a more diverse set of students to learn to code will help broaden the talent pipeline and drive future innovation,” Jeff Wilke, CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer, wrote in a blog post.

Also, Airbnb co-founder Nathan Blecharczyk and his wife committed $1 million to the effort.

These won’t be the last wins for Code.org, which has managed to woo support for its efforts across the political and industry spectrum. (It hosted a fancy gala in the San Francisco Bay Area this week.) Last month the nonprofit wooed a $300 million pledge from scores of blue-chip technology giants, along with a $3 million donation from Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm.
