DOWN TO BUSINESS: Online education startup Teachable has raised $4 million in a Series A funding round from Accomplice Ventures and Naval Ravikant, co-founder of AngelList. The New York City-based company offers instructors a platform to set up online courses—and build businesses around those classes—as opposed to hosting them on websites like Udemy or Coursera.
“It’s the difference between listing a physical good on Amazon and having your own storefront,” Teachable founder Ankur Nagpal told Techcrunch. “While you could make a few thousand dollars on Udemy, you couldn’t build a sustainable business selling courses for $10 to $15.”
Teachable claims to have more than 7 million students on the platform, and at least 22,000 instructors that have collectively made more than $100 million. The company charges $39 to $99 per month for low-traffic courses and $299 per month for online enterprises that can host up to 25 instructors.
