MONEY TALKS: Lingokids, a provider of an English language learning platform geared for young learners, has raised $6 million in a Series A round led by HV Holtzbrinck Ventures. Returning investors include JME Venture Capital, Sabadell Ventures, BigSur and Gwynne Shotwell (President and COO of SpaceX), who all previously invested in the company. New ones include Reach Capital, Athos Capital, and All Iron Ventures. Lingokids previously raised $4 million in a seed round last year.
Founded in 2016, with offices in San Francisco and Madrid, Lingokids offers a subscription-based web and mobile platform that offers games, songs and other multimedia activities aimed at teaching English to children ages 2 to 8. The company claims more than 7 million registered families across more than 180 countries, with the U.S. and Brazil making up the biggest markets in term of paid subscribers. Subscriptions start at $7.49 per month.
With the funding, Lingokids says it plans to grow its team, its features (including adding parent-facing tools) and its library of content to more than 2,000 learning activities.
In addition to this venture round, Lingokids also recently received a $1.1 million grant from the European Union’s Horizon 2020, a research program that funds efforts that support innovation and human capital development across the continent.
