GAME ON: IXL Learning, a San Mateo, Calif.-based provider of online K-12 assessments and instructional exercises, has acquired ABCya and its suite of educational games. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. This deal marks IXL’s first acquisition.
Founded in 2004 by a public-school educator, ABCya offers more than 400 games covering math, reading and other subjects for grades K-5. (Some games are purely puzzles.) Based in Providence, Rhode Island, the company claims more than 120 million users who have played a total of 1.5 billion games on ABCya over the past year. The company offers subscriptions for families that cost $6.99 per month, and a classroom plan for up to 30 devices costs $39.99 per month.
IXL offers one of the most widely-used online platforms where students can watch instructional videos, practice skills and take diagnostic tests for subjects in math, English language arts, science, social studies and Spanish. Founded in 1999, the company currently claims usage by 7 million U.S. students.
