THERE GOES MY HERO: Zaner-Bloser, a Columbus, Ohio-based literacy instructional materials provider, has purchased Word Heroes, a K-2 supplemental literacy program.
Founded in 1888, Zaner-Bloser acquired Word Heroes from Austin, Texas-based Abrams Learning Trends, according to a statement in June. Abrams sold two products earlier this year to Excelligence Learning Corp. as part of Abrams’ exit from the business.
Word Heroes contains eight four-week instructional vocabulary and comprehension units that last 20 minutes a day. The program claims students learn 120 new words in each level. It joins existing Zaner-Bloser products including Superkids Reading, Spelling Connections and Word Wisdom. The company is part of the Highlights family of businesses, perhaps best-known for its monthly magazine of the same name for children 6 to 12.
