ON COURSE: CourseKey, a San Diego-based startup that provides attendance and assessment tools for higher-ed institutions, has raised $5 million in a Series A round led by Builders VC. The company has now raised $9 million to date, reports The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Founded in 2015, CourseKey first launched as an app that used GPS technology to help faculty members track attendance. It has since expanded its suite of tools to let users deliver polls and quizzes, communicate with one another in class chat channels, and peruse digital books and course materials. Data from these tools is fed into a dashboard where college officials can see which students are engaged—or not.
Coursekey is used in more than 80 institutions and counts about 100,000 paying users, according to the Tribune.
Other investors in this round include Ingram Content Group Ventures, Entangled Ventures, Bisk Ventures and Social Starts Limited. Individuals including Steve Altman, Paul Jacobs and Larry Rosenberger also participated.
