Edmentum, a provider of online courses, curriculum and assessments for K-12 and adult learners, has acquired Calvert Education Services, which offers online homeschool programs and other digital tools to support home learners. Terms of the deal were not disclosed in the press release.
Edmentum has a long history and encompasses a collection of tools and services acquired over decades. It dates back to 1960, when researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign created a computer-assisted learning software, then known as PLATO Learning. Over time the Bloomington, Minn.-based company purchased competing tools and services, gone public, and is now privately owned. Today its flagship products include EducationCity, Reading Eggs and Study Island, and Edmentum claims to serve 40,000 schools across the U.S.
Calvert Education Services goes back even further—to 1897, when Calvert School was founded. The institution began providing courses for homeschool families in 1906, and later developed a distance learning business. In 2013 this business, Calvert Education Services, was acquired by an investment group led by Camden Partners Holding.
Today, Calvert claims that its virtual K-8 academy and online educational software has reached more than 600,000 students across over 90 countries. Calvert’s suite of curriculum, lesson plans, assessments and other materials will now be offered through Edmentum’s EdOptions Academy, according to the statement.
