CALIFORNIA DREAMIN': California Senate leader Darrell Steinberg is taking a page out of Washington's Open Course Library by proposing to have materials for 50 common lower-div college courses developed and posted online for free student access. It's part of an initiative to create an online open source library to reduce the cost of course materials, which reportedly sucks $1,300 a year from student pockets. Bravo, we say! But we can't help but share some skepticism as Steinberg seeks $25 million in financing at a time when state education budgets routinely visit the guillotine.
