SIGNS OF LIFE: Time to bust out the bandura. Ukrainian student tech team, quadSquad, took home first place in this year's Microsoft Imagine Cup with EnableTalk, which uses sensory gloves and a smartphone app to allow speech-impaired people to transform sign language into speech. The team boasts that its prototype's hardware (apparently shown here) cost only $75. Mass production would dramatically bring this number down, enabling the team to sell its sensory gloves for as low as $20 a pop. That's quite a fraction of the roughly $1,200 for a similar project introduced earlier this year.
