One-to-One Chromebook Initiative: In the 2013-2014 school year, Chromebooks were deployed to every sixth grader at bothmiddle schools in the district. Since then, the district has expanded to seventh grade and plans to expand to eight grade bySeptember 2015. Chromebooks have helped prepare students for the 2015 PARCC Assessments.
Getting Blended: About a year ago, the district embraced flipped learning, and since then has moved towards a more blendedand personalized model. Teaching in Freehold Township has transformed so that teachers play the role of learning coach, andcourses are shaped so that students can drive their own learning with more collaboration and independent work. To differentiatelearning, teachers use recorded videos, Khan Academy and BrainPop. The district has even created its own modular online coursefor students to take at their own pace on “Personal Financial Literacy and Study Skills.” This year, coaches are supporting teachersin the use of assessment tools such as Google forms to do quick formative assessments and gather information on students withmore frequency.
Tech Support: To support teachers in taking more risks and experimenting with technology, the district has prioritized techcoaching for all teachers. The district supports two coordinators at the district level, along with a technology coach in every school, who is there to support teachers as they use and integrate technology into their curriculum.
Tech Needs & Requirements
Technology tools must be easy for teachers to use and must be web-based. The district is currently focusing on upgrading wireless infrastructure for nextyear, and is putting any major software purchases on hold until the project iscomplete.
